Maureen Kayster (nee Koense)
The founder & CEO of Matek Security Solutions, is the youngest of 4 children. She is 50 years old and born in Stellenbosch, South Africa. She is married to Trevor Steven Kayster and have 4 children aged between 23 and 15 years. She joined SAPS on 11th July 1988. Maureen Kayster obtained her National Diploma in Police Administration at UNISA (formerly known as TECHNIKON SA).
She obtained various other certificates, including a certificate for the Detective Commander Course in 2009. She also obtained a certificate for her contribution to the Thuthuzela project on rape victims. Entries of praise were also made in case dockets, where she gave guidance to investigators, regarding fraud cases, from the prosecutors at a local court.
Maureen served in various divisions, including Public Order Police Service (POPS), Child Protection Unit, Goodwood, FCS (Family Violence, Child protection & Sexual Offenses Unit) Khayelitsha and Durbanville Detective Branch.
She is trained in various firearms, vehicle approach, crowd management, covert operations, fire training, basic first aid, to mention but a few. She was doing operational duties at the Public Order Police Service in and around Cape Town and also in other parts of South Africa since December 1988. That includes border and detached duties and covert operations.
Other duties that she’d performed at POPS included witness protection, protection of VIP’s, transporting of high profile and/ or dangerous prisoners, crowd management and policing of big events, etc. Maureen was also a section leader during taxi violence in Gugulethu, Nyanga & Khayelitsha areas and during the uprising of PAGAD on the Cape Flats. She was also deployed during various operations, including crime operation TSIPA in Kwazulu-Natal in the Kwa-Mashu and Inanda areas.
Maureen was also deployed to Darfur Sudan as a peacekeeper. There she also held various positions such as women desk, investigator, driver, admin clerk and intercessor between rebels and local IDP’s.
She exited SAPS on 31st October 2012 with a clean service record, with the aim to further her career in the private sector. She served in SAPS for almost 25 years. Her last role or position she held was group commander/ administrative head at the Durbanville Detective Service.
She is known with the working procedures of courts as she attended Justice Meetings and Case Flow Meetings on a regular bases. The justice meetings are attended by detective and station commanders of a certain district and a senior prosecutor from NPA. The Case Flow meetings are attended by magistrates, prosecutors, court managers, correctional services, interpreters and police commanders. She is also registered with PSIRA grade A.
